Curated by Elodie Royer and Yoann Gourmel

As the first part of a series of exhibitions devised by Elodie Royer and Yoann Gourmel,
guest curators for the 2011-2012 season, the group show The Feeling of Things takes
as its point of departure the work and spirit of the inventor, artist, designer, writer,
illustrator, graphic designer and teacher, Bruno Munari, “a Peter Pan with the calibre of
a Leonardo”, to borrow Pierre Restany’s words.

By shifting and developing, in everyday life, his continuous research into the circulation
and instability of forms, signs, colors, light, words, and images, he was never ceased to
imagination and method, and logical and intuitive inventiveness, within an approach that
focused on the essentialness of things. From the early Futurist paintings of the 1930s to
his unreadable books, from his useless machines to his talking forks, from his original
xerographies to the high-tension structures of the 1990s, Munari played all his life with
categories and disciplines – using conspicuously limited means – in an attempt to blend them
into a single radical and generous art praxis, urging everyone to develop their own curiosity
and creativity.

The art works commissioned by the London Thames Gateway Development
Corporation (LTGDC) to deal with poor connections and access to Hackney Wick
- an area which sits next to the Olympic Stadium - provide local community
benefits but have stimulated a lively debate over the role that public art should
play in delivering a legacy for east London.

Called ‘Bench to Bench’, Martino Gamper has created bespoke pieces of street
furniture constructed from recycled materials. The scattering of benches and
stools form a trail from Victoria Park to the Olympic Park leading people along
a route which is currently difficult to navigate.

London Thames Gateway Development Corporation is the key government agency
responsible for delivering social and economic growth to transform east London.

It has significant powers to effect change, by helping to improve the prospects for
new homes, jobs, services and environmental improvements for local people.

Galleria Franco Noero is pleased to present the first solo exhibition of the designer Martino Gamper in Torino. Condominium is a unique project expressly conceived for the galleryʼs peculiar spaces and underlines its commitment towards contemporary creative research, overcoming the boundaries between different artistic disciplines.

One of the most unusual constructions in Turin, the “slice of polenta” is the result of a series of coincidences. A 37m space occupied by a wedge shaped three storey building, bought in 1859 by Francesca Scaccabarozzi, wife of the architect Alessandro Antonelli (1798-18888). In 1881, the architect added two floors and an attic, raising the total height to 27m, identical to the length. The façade of the building is only 5m wide, while the thin end of the wedge is a mere 70cm. It now houses the Franco Noero Gallery

Gamper tackles the unusual building approaching it in a unique and personal way, conceiving the rooms at the various levels as individual homes owned by as many occupants, a real ‘condominium’, in which the objects are displayed in the spaces as they were portions of houses, in order to create a total living space. The designer moved to Torino for a month to work on found pieces of furniture (cupboards, tables, nightables, chairs, lamps) which make reference to the middle class style interiors from the Fifties to the Seventies. Gamper builds unique pieces by hybridating the found pieces of furniture, cutting and assembling their parts in new forms, repositioning part of their creative and material history in a project fully orchestrated by him.
